Of all the things that could harm the health of a person, cigarettes are one of the easiest to get away with. It is cheap, not illegal, and it can be consumed even in public. Unfortunately, it is one of the leading causes of so many diseases nowadays. Although the price of a stick has already been doubled in an effort to minimize smoking, this is not enough to keep a smoker from sacrificing hard-earned money for a puff. The label on each pack that says “Smoking is dangerous to your health” has even been changed to more urgent warnings like “Smoking kills”. The message is as blunt as a slap on the face, but to a nicotine-addicted individual, it is nothing but a friendly advice.
There are people who want to quit, but find it very difficult to do so. Withdrawal symptoms can be very overpowering that they drive people back to smoking again. There are a variety of methods being made available to help smokers quit. Some are effective yet just for a short time, especially for those who revert back to smoking due to problems. In such instances, it is crucial to find a more effective method to get rid of the cancer-inducing habit. Fortunately, there is one.
Step 1: Understand one’s purpose on earth.
People were created by God to do good so it is important to have a healthy body in order to be effective in doing so. If people realize this, it would help create a thought that smoking would hinder them from fulfilling their purpose.
For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works, which God hath before ordained that we should walk in them. (Ephesians 2:10)
Neither yield ye your members as instruments of unrighteousness unto sin: but yield yourselves unto God, as those that are alive from the dead, and your members as instruments of righteousness unto God. (Romans 6:13)
Step 2: Seek God’s help.
Nothing can be done without God, not even a single blink of an eye. In times of need, there is no one more reliable than the Creator. He is always ready to receive anyone who wants to get out of their wrongdoings and bad habits. The complete renewal process can not be successful without His intervention.
Even from the days of your fathers ye are gone away from mine ordinances, and have not kepget back tot them. Return unto me, and I will return unto you, saith the LORD of hosts…(Malachi 3:7)
O LORD, I know that the way of man is not in himself: it is not in man that walketh to direct his steps. (Jeremiah 10:23)
Step 3: Let God be the center of our lives.
It is easy to get swayed back into smoking especially if problems star pouring in and causes depression. Trusting that God is bigger and far greater than anything in this world will guarantee that any obstacle or hindrance, even hard-to-treat depression, can be overcome.
Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world. (1 John 4:4)
With all these kept in mind and heart, there would be no need nor desire to get back to old habits. One can be assured of a smoke-free, nicotine-free, and guilt-free existence as instruments of God’s righteousness.
Thanks be to God!
